The first brother, Antioch Peverell , wished to have the most powerful wand out of his combative personality; Death broke a branch off a nearby elder tree and created for him the Elder Wand , a wand more powerful than any other in existence.

The second brother, Cadmus Peverell , out of arrogance, wanted to humiliate Death even further, and wished to have the power to bring loved ones from the grave; Death then took a stone from the riverbed and created for him the Resurrection Stone , a stone capable of bringing the dead back to the living world. The third brother, Ignotus Peverell , who was a humble man, did not trust Death and asked to go on from the river without being followed by Death; Death then gave him his own Cloak of Invisibility, an invisibility cloak that never lost its power through curses or age. In time, the brothers went their separate ways. The three legendary objects, the cloak, the wand and the stone together made up the Deathly Hallows.

Instead of being rewards for their cleverness, the Deathly Hallows were actually part of a cunning plan by Death to kill off the Peverells so he could take them for his own. However, Albus Dumbledore felt that it was more likely that the Hallows were actually created by the very talented and powerful brothers, and that the story of their origins as objects fashioned by Death sprang up around them as result of the powers they possessed. Antioch travelled to a wizarding village where he killed the man he once duelled with , he then boasted of the power of the Elder Wand , that it was unbeatable and in his possession, invoking envy amongst the many wanting to possess it for themselves.

His throat was slit in his sleep by another wizard who stole the Elder Wand. Cadmus travelled back home and used the Resurrection Stone to bring back the woman he loved , but was dismayed to find that it was only a pale imitation of her: the dead did not belong in the living world and could not truly be brought back. He found that she was cold, lifeless, and miserable in the land of the living, nothing like she used to be. In the end Cadmus committed suicide by hanging himself so he could truly join her.

Ignotus used the cloak to remain hidden from Death for a long time. When he was an old man, he passed the cloak onto his son, greeted Death as an old friend, and went with him to the next world. The cloak continued to be passed down through the descendants of the Peverells although the name became extinct in the male line. The wand passed from wizard to wizard, nearly always by the murder of its previous owner. The wand, during its passing from wizard to wizard, has been called "The Death Stick" and the "Wand of Destiny". On an interesting note, no witch is ever stated to have held possession of the wand.

The stone was also passed down through the Peverells' descendants. It eventually ended up in the possession of the House of Gaunt , and was later stolen by Tom Riddle , neither Tom nor Marvolo Gaunt were aware of the powers of the stone, nor that it was a Hallow. Marvolo was solely concerned with the "noble origins" of the stone, made into a ring, and thought that the Hallows symbol on it was the family coat of arms. Lord Voldemort could not have been aware of the stone's true origin either, as he transformed the stone into a Horcrux.

Overtime, the legend of the Deathly Hallows was dismissed by most as a mere fairy tale, and the few who desired to reunite all three misunderstood the title "Master of Death" was a form of immortality. The quest for these fabled items were considered a lure for fools, and many had died in their quest for them. In his youth, Albus Dumbledore , along with soon-to-become Dark Wizard Gellert Grindelwald , entertained dreams of finding and appropriating the Hallows for himself.

This quest for power also manifested itself in his vision of a future where wizards would rule over and control Muggles "for the greater good". A family argument later caused him to revise and reconsider his beliefs after the death of his sister. After his sister Ariana died, Dumbledore sought out the Resurrection Stone in the hopes that finding it would somehow revive his dead sister and parents. Thus when he chanced upon it sometime in , when it had already been turned into a Horcrux by Voldemort , the temptation proved too much to handle and he put on the ring, invoking a terrible curse Voldemort had placed which caused his right hand to wither and die. Only when the Horcrux was destroyed by Godric Gryffindor's Sword did the stone revert to its normal state, with its original powers intact.

Dumbledore also came into possession of the Cloak of Invisibility when he borrowed it from its owner, James Potter , a descendant of Ignotus Peverell. It was he who passed the Cloak on to James' son, Harry , to whom it proved to be a useful tool in defeating Voldemort and his allies. He also gave to Harry the Resurrection Stone , by means of the Snitch Harry had caught in his first ever Quidditch match. Instead, Snape got a split-second to give him a teardrop full of memories, so that he could show him his gut-wrenching backstory of unrequited love of Harry's mum Lily. More importantly, he showed him how he'd always been looking out for "the boy" by feigning allegiance to the Dark Lord.

The only reason he murdered Dumbledore was because the headmaster was already dying from wearing Marvolo's Gaunt Ring with the Resurrection Stone , and he didn't want Draco to be forced to do it at Voldemort's demand. And his obvious contempt for Harry at Hogwarts was due to his similarity to his pseudo-bully dad James, but despite his distaste for those personality traits, he really was trying to protect Harry all the while, so he could fulfill his destiny to defeat the Dark Lord. As had been foreseen for years, Harry Potter was always meant to die in his big battle with Voldemort.

It's why Dumbledore took such a hefty role in his upbringing and education, and why he was always special around the wizarding world. Professor Trelawney spookily predicted the dark future ahead of the Boy Wizard early on in his magical career, but Harry himself didn't quite understand his deep, physical connection with You Know Who until Snape shared his memories with Harry, and confirmed that Harry was the final horcrux made by Voldemort. After he successfully vanquished the Helga Hufflepuff's cup and the Diadem of Rowena Ravenclaw two of the last remaining horcruxes , and tasked Hermione and Ron with killing the snake, Harry set off on what he knew would be a suicide mission, to allow Voldemort to strike him with an Avada Kedavra spell in the forest.

He didn't exactly know what would happen after that, of course, but he trusted the late headmaster enough to follow his lead, even unto his deathbed if needed be, despite what Albus' own doubtful brother had to say about it. But it wouldn't be the end for the Boy Who Lived after all, because Dumbledore awaited him with news that he'd successfully killed off the part of Voldemort that remained inside of him in the process of dying, and that he had a choice to board a train back to the realm of the living or to just move on Harry, knowing his battle wasn't done, opted for the former.

He left behind the scaly, fetal version of Voldemort that had infected his brain for so long, and used his perceived death to gain an advantage as Hagrid carried him back to the school, with an unknowing Voldemort bragging about his conquest to garner new recruits from the ravaged student pool. No matter how many horcruxes Harry and his friends successfully destroyed, Voldemort was still a more powerful wizard than him, so when Harry arose from the dead to pick a final fight with the Dark Lord, he was handily overtaken by Voldemort. But Voldemort still couldn't kill him a second time with the wand, even after he'd taken ownership from Snape. Well, it turned out that Snape wasn't the one who'd gained control of the Elder Wand in the first place, so it didn't pass to Voldemort upon Snape's execution by Nagini.

Sure, Snape had killed Dumbledore and taken possession of the wand in Half-Blood Prince , but it was Draco who'd originally disarmed Dumbledore, and thus received the allegiance of the Elder Wand. Then, when Harry disarmed him in their subsequent duel, it was Harry who'd laid claim to the Elder Wand's efficacy. So, while the Elder Wand was successfully used to strike its master down in the forest, when Harry had thoroughly surrendered himself, he still wasn't disarmed of the wand in that battle. So, it remained loyal to Harry, instead of Voldemort. When Voldemort tried to cast a death curse on him a second time, this time against its owner's wishes, it was a no-go. This is how the fight got dragged out long enough for
